The
symbol that best represents the Celtic spirit is unquestionably the
circle. The ultimate symmetry, the perfect balance, the path that
always returns to its beginnings. The Great Wheel, the endless cycle
by which life gives rise to new life.
CHASE
depicts a classic symbol of the circular nature of life: the dog and
cat in endless pursuit. One of the most ancient artistic motifs is of
an animal chasing its prey, as seen from cave paintings
to the
frescoes of the High Renaissance. Of course, today's dogs and cats are
of the domestic variety, often (gasp) even living together . .
although generally we take pains to keep them well separated.

The
dog has long been the symbol of fidelity and as a hunting
companion has been associated with the male.
|
|
| The
cat has been the traditional representation of the female
aspect since Egyptian times, when she was revered as Bast, the
goddess of the home. In medieval Celtic monasteries, cats were
kept by the monks as both pets and mouse-catchers, protecting
their owners' stores of grain. |

| The
symbols and motifs used in Celtic art are often ancient, but each
artist brings a fresh voice to
their interpretation and new designs are not only possible, but
inevitable. Michael Carroll's Celtic artworks are not copies of
ancient works, but are brand new, done using the same methods employed
by the traditional Celtic artists. CHASE was executed in gouache paint
on calfskin manuscript vellum, using hand-cut quill pens and extremely
fine detail brushes.

CHASE,
being a circular work, has no "right"
orientation...it can be viewed in any position. The artist's
preference is indicated by the fact that he has signed and
numbered each print twice, top and bottom. So that cat lovers
and dog lovers might have their choice, CHASE can be hung with
either animal's head at the top.
