The hallmark feature of the
ancient Celtic stone cross is its prominent ring. The wheel cross developed
its particular shape over the centuries, beginning with the familiar XPI or
Chi Rho symbol, which was enclosed within a circle and gradually lost its P
as the X and I shifted into the familiar cross within a ring.
The earliest stone crosses
were simple flat slabs on which the cross design was carved in relief. Later
on, the artists began to drill the holes all the way through the stone,
creating an open lattice. Eventually the cross itself was liberated from the
rock background and became a freestanding monument. The ring or wheel shape
proved to be as useful as it was decorative: the ring now helped bear the
weight of the cross' heavy arms.
CELTIC CROSS II is an
original design by Michael Carroll, done in the style of the ancients. The
symbols of the Four Evangelists are present, as well as a depiction of the
arrest of Christ. In Celtic times, the stone crosses were often carved with
Biblical scenes for the benefit of those who could not read.
CELTIC CROSS II was designed,
transferred to screen and printed entirely by hand by the artist. Each print
is unique, the parchment paper having been treated with gouache by the
artist to achieve an aged appearance.
