The
raven, one of the most intelligent and cunning of all
creatures, is in many religious traditions a messenger or
intermediary between the worlds of the living and the dead.
|
|
| In
Celtic times the appearance of the raven on the middle night
of the three-day autumnal equinox festival of Samhain would
have been a harbinger of evil tidings. It was on this
night, of all nights of the year, when the boundaries between
our world and the underworld dissolved, a night when sensible
people stayed indoors, safe at home. |

| In
Irish mythology, the raven was a symbol of the Hbadhbh (crow in Old
Irish), the powerful goddess of war, who often took the form of a crow
appearing over the battlefield. Carrion feeders, ravens and
crows represented death and the underworld, but as frequent visitors
to wheat and cornfields, in many native cultures also became associated
with the harvest and therefore a symbol of life.

Michael
Carroll's illuminated manuscript page SENTINEL depicts the
guardian of gates in heraldic style, surrounded by symbolic
solunar and harvest imagery. The border takes the shape of an
Egyptian cartouche and is filled with a double-bay
key-pattern, interspersed with Celtic knotwork. The
key-pattern is one of the most ancient of all motifs, dating
to Neolithic times.
